Female Protagonist Sale and Women of GOG!

Today, we celebrate – we celebrate strong, intelligent and talented women of this world; we celebrate femininity, the beauty of it, and everything it brings. We wouldn’t be where we are if not for incredible women around us – so we want to take the opportunity of this special day and show our appreciation!
For the occasion of International Women’s Day, we’re more than happy to launch our very own Female Protagonist Sale – where we aim to put a spotlight on games in which powerful women take reign and lead the storyline. The presence of female protagonists in video games has been a subject of debate for many years; while women make up nearly half of the gaming population, female representation in video games has historically been limited and often relegated to stereotypical or sexualized roles. However, recent years have seen a significant increase in the number of female protagonists in video games – which has had a positive impact on both players and the industry as a whole. If you haven’t already, you can now join all the brave heroines on their adventures to see what girls are really capable of – before our sale ends, on March 13, 2 PM UTC!
Among many other titles, we couldn’t miss Horizon Zero Dawn™ (-67%) and Aloy, on her legendary quest. Throughout it, you’ll see how an outcast from her tribe, the young hunter, fights to slowly uncover her past and discover her destiny – all while unleashing devastating, tactical attacks against unique Machines and rival tribes, and exploring an absolutely stunning open world, teeming with wildlife and danger. Aloy’s bravery, wit and unparalleled skill will continue to baffle you throughout the gameplay – imagine the team she’d make though, if paired up with yet another incredible heroine that just had to appear here!
We’re talking, of course, about Amicia De Rune, the protagonist of A Plague Tale: Innocence (-75%). Only 15 years old, Amicia is already a strong woman, independent and trained in the art of hunting; throughout her heartrending journey you’ll see an unconditional love, commitment and trust that she holds towards her 5-year old brother, as they’ll struggle to survive in a brutal, unforgiving world.
We can’t forget about some more old school titles, too – and especially, we couldn’t miss Jade, a rebellious action reporter from Beyond Good & Evil™ (-70%). In this classic title, you’ll join the heroine in an underground resistance group to expose government’s secrets – all while using her unmatchable stealth, force and wits. Armed with her camera, dai-jo staff and fierce determination, Jade shows just how badass she can be; all to discover shocking evidence of horrific conspiracy and, ultimately, battle the evil.
How surprised she’d be, if she was about to meet Misfortune Ramirez Hernandez – an imaginative 8 year old and a heroine of Little Misfortune (-65%). If you embark on her adventure, you’ll come upon the horrors of lost innocence, trust and childhood, all in an interactive point-and-click game. Misfortune, the little protagonist, goes on both sweet and dark explorations – seeking the prize of Eternal Happiness, as a gift to her Mommy. Led by her new friend, Mr. Voice, she decides to venture into the woods; where, while mysteries are unravelled, bad luck surfaces.
Apart from the female protagonists in games though, we also have our very own female protagonists – Women of GOG, passionate and talented souls that continue to inspire us every day. We decided to ask a few of them about their experiences and thoughts within the subject of the gaming industry; so let’s hear what they have to say!
Olha, Senior Direct Marketing Specialist, was asked: As a woman, what inspired you to pursue a career in the gaming industry?
I've always wanted to do a job which would be visible for many people and would somehow be creative. Games had been my hobby for a long time and studying geographically close to the CDPR and GOG office, I thought that it might be a place where I could mix my ambitions and my hobby. At first, I tried to get a job as a QA, but having no experience I didn't get it. Although, I now think that it was for the better, because it gave me a chance to add another thing that was interesting for me to the equation – marketing. I was eager to work among people with similar interests as mine and I still think that people I met in this place are the best!
Zuzanna, Junior Creative Communication Specialist, was asked: How do you see the role of women in the gaming industry evolving in the future?
I think, in general, the role of women – not only in the gaming industry – is something we’re all more and more aware of. More girls are encouraged to not be ashamed of themselves, more women decide to pursue their careers and ambitions, more young females choose to be whoever they want to be, despite the well-known gender norms. I’d say we’re just not afraid of challenges anymore; we know how strong we are, and that we can be just as good as men, no matter the position or industry. And when it comes to gaming – we can be nerds, we can be good techies, we can be business-oriented professionals, but most of all, we can be passionate and successful. I couldn’t be happier to live in the times where I can see it happening, evolving, and bringing women into more and more spotlight – and above all, I’m super proud to be a part of it.
Olga, Senior Scrum Master, was asked: What advice would you give to other women interested in pursuing a career in gaming?
When I started working at GOG, I was really afraid of being too much of a “normie” gamer. My colleagues turned out to be extremely supportive though, and I’ve learned so much from them! That being said – do not worry about standing out. You will most probably get tremendous support from your co-workers, no matter their gender! Be prepared to learn from them and share your perspective; if you’re in the right place, it will be appreciated.
We’d like to thank our colleagues for their input and wish them happy International Women’s Day! Have a good one – and you, don’t forget to check out our Female Protagonist Sale!
